If you venture out in the Wheatbelt, about halfway between Quairading and Bruce Rock, you’ll find the sweet little town of Shackleton. Most commonly known for the Shackleton Bank, which was Australia’s smallest bank before it closed it’s doors in 1997, Shackleton is so much more than that! The town itself has about 15 houses and 30 residents, many of whom you’re likely to meet during your visit.
The quaint little bank is definitely worth a visit during your time in Shackleton. Although you’re not allowed inside, you can pretty much see the entire interior of the bank by looking through the window (including posters from 1997 notifying the public of the bank’s closure). The exterior however is so cute and photo-worthy!
Venture a little bit further down the street and you’ll find the friendly Ivor at the general store, where you can buy an ice-cream and the paper. Right next door is the gorgeous old-fashioned playground, fun for young and old alike! The metal swings, slides and playground equipment really are a walk down memory lane. Despite being so simple, the playground really is so much fun!
At the end of the “main street”, you’ll come across Steve and his charming art gallery and studio. The garden out the front is bursting with greenery, with a large array of bushes and flowers. Scattered around the yard is also a large assortment of gorgeous, carefully handcrafted sculptures, made from scrap metal. Some are funny, some are pretty, some are cute… but they’re all amazing! Inside, there’s more! Paintings, curios and wood bowls are just some of the things you are likely to discover. You can stay and enjoy a coffee and scone before making a purchase (which will be incredibly difficult once you realise really how many different pieces are on offer!)
Shackleton is well worth a visit, so take some time to swing past one time! There’s so much more on offer in the shires of Quairading and Bruce Rock also, so make a day or two of it!
Have you ever been to Shackleton?
